Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds within cannabis that are reported to relieve many ailments. Cannabinoids replicate endocannabinoids, compounds our bodies naturally produce to balance and control communication between cells. Researchers believe that unpleasant symptoms and diseases occur when a deficiency or problem affects the endocannabinoid system.When cannabis is administered, cannabinoids bind to receptor sites in the brain and body. Cannabinoids have different effects based on which receptors they bind to. For example, CBN (Cannabinol) binds with CB-2 receptors located throughout the body, which may explain why patients report that it is a powerful analgesic. With an increasing understanding of the effects of cannabinoids, patients can now tailor their cannabinoid consumption to the type of relief they need. 

Terpenes and terpenoids are the primary constituents of the essential oils of many types of plants and flowers. They give cannabis varieties their distinctive properties, aromas and flavors. During the process of extracting essential oils from cannabis, terpenes are often lost. Dirty Arm Farm strives to maintain or replenish vital terpenes in the creation of all of its products.Researchers estimate that there are 80 or more cannabinoids and dozens of terpenes found in cannabis, each containing unique effects. However, due to restrictions on research, our understanding of many of these compounds is still limited. Therefore, we can only share what we have gathered from patients and the research that is currently available. We encourage patients to share their results with us so that we can continue to advance the body of knowledge available about cannabis. 


THCa is reported to have anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory abilities, which show potential to inhibit the growth of cancerous cells. Its anti-spasmodic properties that help subdue muscle spasms may explain the success some of our patients are reporting controlling seizures. Patients have reported that THCa’s anti-inflammatory effects range from arthritis to endometriosis and even menstrual cramps. Some patients report energizing effects from its use.


CBN’s primary reported effects are as an anti-epileptic, anti-spasmodic and reliever of intraocular pressure. Recent studies suggest that CBN can be administered as an antidepressant, can be used to prevent convulsions and to sedate patients experiencing pain.

It shows promise for those suffering from Glaucoma, inflammation and insomnia. CBN is often referred to as a natural aspirin or non-narcotic type pain reliever (analgesic), but is estimated to be three times stronger.


CBD has been reported to be effective in treating inflammation, diabetes, cancer, mood disorders (PTSD to ADD) and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. It has been reported to have anti-convulsive, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, anti-nausea, anti-rheumatoid arthritic and sedative properties. One clinical trial showed that it eliminates anxiety and other unpleasant psychological ailments.

The CBD molecule exists in many plants including Flax and Azaleas. While some industrial hemp products offer high CBD concentrations, research suggests that CBD extracted from cannabis plants is more effective.


Patients report that THC helps reduce nausea and vomiting, which is particularly helpful for those undergoing chemotherapy. Patients suffering from AIDS often experience a lack of appetite, which THC may be helpful in counteracting. Some patients also use THC for glaucoma relief.


Studies have shown that THCv is an excellent appetite suppressant, as it appears to block the rewarding sensations experienced when eating. THCv is also reported to hold anti-convulsive properties, which may lower the seizure threshold for those with epilepsy. While it does have psychoactive properties, THCv reportedly lends itself to a shorter, psychedelic, clear-headed effect, which is shorter lasting than THC.


Research suggests that CBC is an inflammation and pain inhibitor, which has been successful for treating migraines and stimulating bone growth. CBC may have potential to inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors due to its interaction with anandamide, an endocannabinoid known to fight breast cancer. Studies suggest CBC works best in conjunction with CBD and THC to create a synergistic effect.
